Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Department


Strategic Aims

As part of the ETH-domain, PSI and the Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Department are committed to serving the Swiss government and society. By research in fields of societal importance we strive for national and international relevance, we care for an open dialogue with the public and for contributions to the sustainable development of the Swiss society and its energy structure.

These activities are financed by the Swiss Government and tax payer’s money, as well as by the Swiss industry in shares of 55% and 45%, respectively.

The Nuclear Energy and Safety Research Department

Contributes to the safe and competitive operation of the current Swiss nuclear power plants and to safe assessments for the geological storage of waste by improving the scientific basis in relevant geographical sites.
LES

Supports nuclear power plants operators and the safety authority and assures a stand-by function in key areas, especially such as those needing the services of a hot laboratory.
Hotlab

Provides input for strategic decision-making of stakeholders in politics, economy, science and society.
GaBE

Promotes the option „nuclear energy“ by research and development towards a higher degree of sustainability.
Generation IV

Provides a broad spectrum of opportunities for the education of young nuclear scientists with a broader know-how also in other energy sources.

Supports and uses the worldwide positive signals for a public policy change of nuclear energy
